Shipping stocks soar as bears abandon ship
Shares of shipping companies surged Wednesday for a second session, as a bit of good news for the industry amid a sea of worry helped spark a buying frenzy.
Diana Containerships Inc.’s stock DCIX, +109.45% was a highlight, rocketing as much as 325%---it was halted a number of times for volatility---to an intraday high of $26.17, the highest level seen since May 2014, before paring some gains.
The stock was recently more than double Tuesday’s closing price in afternoon trade, after more than doubling (155%) the previous session. Volume spiked to 18 million shares, or about 90 times the full-day average over the past 30 days, according to FactSet. That comes less than a week after the stock closed at a split-adjusted record low of $2.19 on Nov. 10.

“The company does not comment on market moves, or the price of its stock,” a company spokesperson said in phone interview with MarketWatch.
Globus Maritime Ltd.’s stock GLBS, +188.06% nearly tripled Wednesday on volume of 4.5 million shares, which was almost 60 times the full-day average.......MORE
