Syrian Dictator Assad Has a New Instagram Account (seriously)

The soft watercolor effect of the Walden filter on Instagram gives photos a bluish "late afternoon" effect. Like most Instagram filters the Walden effect has a retro feel. Add this mellowing effect to achieve a romantic glow in shots that reminds me of spending a lazy summer afternoon without the constant interruptions of my iPhone. Perfect for a landscape or cityscape, vacay photos, pets, and even product shots.

Dictators and Autocrats 
As war rages in Syria, the country’s President, Bashar al-Assad, is inviting the world to look on the sunny side of his despotic rule with a new Instagram account, syrianpresidency. Stopping just short of applying the Walden filter, the account has been posting photos of the dictator and his wife, Asma, surrounded by smiling and grateful citizens as they visit the sick and the elderly, and comfort crying children. A spokesperson for the U.S. State Department said, “It’s repulsive that the Assad regime would use this to gloss over the brutality and suffering it’s causing.”
