Monsanto Co. MON -2.98% said it is considering sabotage as a possible cause of the finding of unapproved genetically modified wheat in an Oregon field and that its testing reaffirms the incident is isolated.
The company also said it has requested but not received any samples of the wheat in question from the U.S. Department of Agriculture or Oregon State University.
The presence of genetically modified wheat in the eastern Oregon field, announced last week by the USDA, is likely due to the "accidental or purposeful mixing of seed" that was planted in the field, said Robb Fraley, Monsanto's chief technology officer. Mr. Fraley wouldn't rule out the possibility of sabotage in a conference call with reporters.
"We're considering all options at this point, and that's certainly one of the possibilities we're looking at," he said.
