Just A Heads-up: The Work Stoppage At The Nation's Railroads Did Not Go Away, Stay Tuned

The U.S. is Now 30 Days Away From a Possible Railroad Labor Strike

Delays on U.S. railroads have been a growing problem for shipping agricultural goods all year. Labor discussions are ongoing and with the grain industry concerned about a possible labor stoppage in mid-September, which would be the height of Midwest harvest. 

Just this week, the White House-appointed Presidential Emergency Board (PEB) released a recommendation as part of the ongoing collective bargaining process. Both sides have 30 days to accept those recommendations. If the two parties don't agree, then rail workers are allowed to go on strike as of Sept. 16....

Railroaders are furious with Tuesday’s Presidential Emergency Board report, in which a panel of Biden-appointed mediators sided with management on virtually every point in a contract dispute. The ruling proposed wage increases below the rate of inflation and upheld the “right” of management to unilaterally impose punishing attendance policies that have driven tens of thousands out of the industry. The deal also removes caps on employee monthly contributions to the health care program, paving the wave [sic] for massive increases in premiums....

One of the key tools of central banks and governments in fighting the inflation they caused is advocating for wage increases below the rate of inflation. Although by definition this is an answer to a potential wage-price spiral it lays the cost of the inflation fight on the backs of working stiffs. Not on rentiers, and not on COLA-receiving welfare and entitlement recipients but on workers.
