"U.S. Forgives $6.8 Billion in Public Service Worker Student Loans"

I've heard it said that this is a combination of outright buying votes of the college educated and a money laundering operation: give money to base; base pays public employee union dues, public employee unions fund politicians who give the loan payoff money to union members.

Whether that is true or not I don't know, but it does bring to mind Franklin Delano Roosevelt's thinking on public employee unions, NYT February 18, 2011:

TL:dr: a completely different situation from that of private sector employees up against "The Man" as they fight for an equitable share of profits.

The headline story from Bloomberg, May 4:

The U.S. Department of Education approved about $6.8 billion in student debt relief for more than 113,000 borrowers through adjustments to its Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.

The relief -- which the DOE says will average about $60,000 per borrower -- is being given after President Joe Biden made changes to the program in October, under which nonprofit and government employees can have their federal student loan debt forgiven after 10 years, or 120 payments.....
