Crop Progress: "Not Much Corn Picking Going On, USDA Reports"

This is why the worries about frost are top of mind. This year's late planting means much of the major crop areas are running two weeks behind schedule so the focus of the crop progress reports shifts from plant conditions to harvest benchmarks.

From Successful Farming, Sept. 30:
The U.S. soybean harvest is sharply behind too. 
U.S. farmers continue to see their combines sitting  idle, because either the crop isn’t ready or the fields are too wet.
Corn
In its weekly Crop Progress Report [Monday afternoon], the USDA pegged the U.S. corn harvest at 11% complete vs. an 19% five-year average.

The overall condition of the corn crop is rated at 57% good to excellent in the top 18 corn producing states, vs. 57% a week ago.

Also, 88% of the corn has entered the dent stage vs. a 98% five-year average.
