"URGENT: Nikkei plunges over 2% on U.S. credit ceiling downgrade"

Japan does hold a lot of U.S. government debt.

The Nikkei plunged by over 2 percent on Wednesday amid concerns over the downgrading of U.S. debt by major credit rating agency Fitch Ratings.

The benchmark extended its losses in the afternoon, temporarily plummeting over 700 points.
