One possible fly in the ointment: Peak Helium!

Helium bubble ‘to burst’

THE world’s supply of balloon gas helium is set to run out in a DECADE, a scientist said yesterday.

The price has already doubled in a year.

Now Professor Lee Sobtoka has called for it to be rationed, and existing stocks recycled. He said at Washington University: “There’s no way to make an alternative.”

The world’s reserves have built up underground from the decay of uranium and thorium. The biggest is in Amarillo, Texas, and due to run dry in a few years.

Helium is used as a coolant, and The Sun told last month how singer Cyndi Lauper made her voice squeak inhaling it.

Will our hero be grounded?
