Democracy, European Style—"Ex-Commissioner Breton: ‘What Was Done in Romania May Be Needed in Germany’"... (it's a gas, gas, gas)

From The Romania Journal, January 10:

Former French European Commissioner Thierry Breton pointed to the Romanian precedent to evoke a possible annulment of the results of the German elections, if they are not conducted correctly, an intervention that came in the context of the debate about Elon Musk’s interference in Berlin politics, writes the website of the French television BFMTV.

Breton called for “calm” in the face of Elon Musk’s interference in the internal affairs of Europe, stating that the law is strong enough to act as a deterrent.

If, on the other hand, the Tesla and X boss breaks the law, especially in Germany, by supporting the extremist AfD party, the former European Commissioner believes that it will be necessary for the authorities to act as in Romania, where the presidential elections were canceled, writes the website of the French television BFMTV, which recalls Călin Georgescu’s TikTok campaign.

“Freedom of expression is a fundamental element in Europe,” Breton said on Thursday, January 9, on RMC. He made this statement in the context of the debate over Elon Musk’s interference in the politics of several European states, especially the internal affairs of Germany, which is on the eve of early federal elections.

Despite the attacks by Musk, who has announced his support for the extremist AfD party, Thierry Breton insisted that the Tesla and X boss remains for now just a “citizen” and is not yet a member of the Trump administration.Basically, he has the right to think and say what he wants, even if he does it in a shocking way,” Breton said. The former European Commissioner warned, however, that what Musk does on social networks that also operate in Europe must be regulated. The law exists,” he stressed....
....They did it in Romania and, obviously, it will have to be done, if necessary, in Germany as well,” he concluded, referring to the cancellation of the first round of the presidential elections in December....

The situation in Germany is probably less likely to result in the Brussels-powers-that-be going all heavy-handed in their attempt to maintain power for one overriding reason.
Romania is hydrocarbon-important, Germany isn't.

Romania has natural gas, Germany doesn't.

From Euractiv, January 10:

Romania on its way to become EU’s largest gas producer
Neptun Deep holds an estimated 100 billion cubic metres (bcm) of gas.

The agreement between Austria's OMV and Germany's Uniper to supply gas from the latter's Black Sea project in Romania's economic zone has put the spotlight on the country's significant gas supply potential.

The five-year deal for 15 terawatt-hours of natural gas from the Neptun Deep project off Romania's Black Sea coast, in water depths of between 100 and 1,700 metres, comes after Russia last month halted gas supplies via Ukraine and a wider reduction in European Union energy purchases from Moscow due to its invasion of Ukraine.

As reported by Reuters, the total contract volume represents about 1.5% of Germany's gas imports in 2024 and would be the first deal to underpin the long-awaited deepwater project, more than a decade after gas was first discovered in Romania's section of the Black Sea.

Neptun Deep, which is expected to start production in 2027, holds an estimated 100 billion cubic metres (bcm) of gas, making it one of the EU's most significant natural gas reserves.

Once Neptun Deep is operational, Romania will become the EU's largest gas producer and a net gas exporter for the first time.

Overall, Romania is estimated to have offshore gas reserves of around 200 billion cubic metres, which promise to help diversify the region's supply.

According to George Scutaru, director of the New Strategy Center, a Romanian think tank, Neptun Deep will produce between seven and eight billion cubic metres a year, with potential revenues of more than $25 billion - the equivalent of three and a half years of Bucharest's current defence spending....
