FB Is Backing Away From Facial Recognition, Meta Isn't (FB; MVRS)

 Whoa, the plot thickens.

The social network is scaling back facial recognition, but similar technology could show up in the metaverse. 

Facebook says it will stop using facial recognition for photo-tagging. In a Monday blog post, Meta, the social network’s new parent company, announced that the platform will delete the facial templates of more than a billion people and shut off its facial recognition software, which uses an algorithm to identify people in photos they upload to Facebook. This decision represents a major step for the movement against facial recognition, which experts and activists have warned is plagued with bias and privacy problems.

But Meta’s announcement comes with a couple of big caveats. While Meta says that facial recognition isn’t a feature on Instagram and its Portal devices, the company’s new commitment doesn’t apply to its metaverse products, Meta spokesperson Jason Grosse told Recode. In fact, Meta is already exploring ways to incorporate biometrics into its emerging metaverse business, which aims to build a virtual, internet-based simulation where people can interact as avatars. Meta is also keeping DeepFace, the sophisticated algorithm that powers its photo-tagging facial recognition feature.

“We believe this technology has the potential to enable positive use cases in the future that maintain privacy, control, and transparency, and it’s an approach we’ll continue to explore as we consider how our future computing platforms and devices can best serve people’s needs,” Grosse told Recode. “For any potential future applications of technologies like this, we’ll continue to be public about intended use, how people can have control over these systems and their personal data, and how we’re living up to our responsible innovation framework.”

That facial recognition for photo-tagging is leaving Facebook, also known as the “big blue app,” is certainly significant. Facebook originally launched this tool in 2010 to make its photo-tagging feature more popular. The idea was that letting an algorithm automatically suggest tagging a particular person in a photo would make it easier than manually tagging them and, perhaps, encourage more people to tag their friends. The software is informed by the photos people post of themselves, which Facebook uses to create unique facial templates tied to their profiles. The DeepFace artificial intelligence technology, which was developed from pictures uploaded by Facebook users, helps match people’s facial templates to faces in different photos. 

Privacy experts raised concerns immediately after the feature launched. Since then, pivotal studies from researchers like Joy Buolamwini, Timnit Gebru, and Deb Raji have also shown that facial recognition can have baked-in racial and gender bias, and is particularly less accurate for women with darker skin. In response to growing opposition to the technology, Facebook made the facial recognition feature opt-in in 2019. The social media network also agreed to pay a $650 million settlement last year after a lawsuit claimed the tagging tool violated Illinois’s Biometric Information Privacy Act....

"China Moves Beyond QR Codes to 'Face Economy' as Facial Recognition Expands into Healthcare, Transportation, and Agriculture"

China's digital economy is evolving from a QR code-based society into a "Face Economy." Facial recognition technology, capable of identifying one person among 1.4 billion in about three seconds, is spreading across sectors including healthcare, transportation, tourism, and agriculture. The National Healthcare Security Administration is promoting a facial-recognition-based medical insurance payment system. A smart elderly care center in Beijing uses facial recognition to measure health indicators and assist in early Alzheimer's diagnosis. Major train stations in Guangzhou and Wuhan have introduced facial recognition boarding systems, and the technology is also expanding into automotive and agricultural industries. However, concerns over biometric data leaks and excessive tracking of personal information have emerged. China's government last year issued the "Facial Recognition Technology Application Security Management Measures" to regulate the space. 

China's digital economy is rapidly evolving beyond the era of QR code payments into a "Face Economy." Facial recognition infrastructure, which allows individuals to verify their identity, make payments, enter buildings, and settle medical bills simply by looking at a camera without pulling out a smartphone, is spreading across healthcare, transportation, tourism, and agriculture.

According to industry sources on Thursday, facial recognition technology in China can identify a single person among the country's 1.4 billion population in about three seconds. The recognition accuracy exceeds 99%, reaching a level that can distinguish between twins. Deep learning algorithms can compensate in real-time for factors like masks, glasses, and even subtle changes from cosmetic surgery or aging.

The fastest-growing area is healthcare. Starting this year, China's National Healthcare Security Administration is promoting a medical insurance payment system that combines facial recognition, QR codes, mobile payments, and credit payments. The facial payment method allows users to authenticate themselves and settle medical expenses simultaneously simply by scanning their face at a terminal, eliminating the need for a physical medical insurance card or smartphone. The administration views this system as particularly useful for elderly people who are not familiar with smartphone operations.

A smart elderly care center in Beijing uses high-resolution cameras to identify seniors' faces. The system then detects subtle changes in blood flow on the facial surface to measure health indicators such as anemia risk, blood oxygen levels, and sleep quality. This system is used as a preliminary screening tool to identify early signs of Alzheimer's disease and to compare past and present health data.

Facial recognition has also become routine in transportation. Passengers pre-register with their real names and can pay their fares by scanning their faces at the ticket gates. The facial-recognition-based boarding system is spreading, particularly at major train stations in cities like Guangzhou and Wuhan....

Like It Or Not Facial Recognition Is Already Here. These Are The Industries It Will Transform First

From screening patients for clinical trials to assessing the emotional state of drivers, we dive in to how facial recognition technology is shaping the future.
Today, people most associate facial recognition with unlocking an iPhone or a laptop.
The biometric software behind facial recognition applications can identify facial structures, contours, and expressions, making it a no-brainer for security and identification purposes.
But it can also lead to creative applications that serve a different purpose. Listerine, for example, created an app that uses facial recognition to notify people who are blind that they were being smiled at.
While the technology is still developing, many companies (including Amazon) are banking on it as a disruptive force in a myriad of markets. At the same time, the tech is highly controversial — with privacy as a point of concern.
From creating checkout-free retail stores to eliminating concert tickets, here are 16 industries that are starting to transform with facial recognition technology.

1. Law Enforcement
As the government adds a layer of artificial intelligence to its surveillance, startups are playing a key role in providing it with the underlying facial recognition technology. Chinese unicorns like SenseTime, Face++, and CloudWalk, for example, are already working with the Chinese government here.
But even in the United States, interest in the tech is surging, according to the CB Insights patent analysis tool.
Amazon, for example, is selling its tech to law enforcement agencies.
Academic institutions like Carnegie Mellon University are also working on technology to help enhance video surveillance. The university was granted a patent around “hallucinating facial features” — a method to help law enforcement agencies identify masked suspects by reconstructing a full face when only the periocular region of the face is captured. Facial recognition may then be used to compare the “hallucinated face” to images of actual faces to find ones with a strong correlation.
Because this technology is still relatively young, the algorithms haven’t learned enough about the nuances between faces and skin tones, among other things, to provide the total accuracy that law enforcement teams need. 

Broadly, facial recognition tech is not free of flaws. Amazon, for example, was in the news for reportedly misidentifying some Congressmen as criminals.
But the tools have the ability to improve. For instance, Amazon was granted a patent that explores additional layers of security, including asking users to perform certain actions like “smile, blink, or tilt his or her head.” These actions can then be combined with “infrared image information, thermal imaging data, or other such information” for more robust authentication.

2. Healthcare

In its most straightforward application, facial recognition has the potential to make it easier for patients to sign in at the doctor or hospital without waiting in line or juggling forms. But there are a number of other ways that the technology can be used to improve services.
Since 2015, Apple has launched two open-source frameworks — ResearchKit and CareKit — to help clinical trials recruit patients and monitor their health remotely. Researchers at Duke University, for example, developed an Autism & Beyond app that uses the iPhone’s front camera and facial recognition algorithms to screen children for autism.

A more futuristic use case is passive monitoring of healthcare biometrics, or extracting changes to facial features over time.

In December 2017, a Google patent was published with an ambitious vision for analyzing cardiovascular function from a person’s skin color or skin displacement.

Amazon applied for a similar patent for passive monitoring in 2014, which was later granted in 2017. It combines recognition of facial features (using neural nets or other algorithmic approaches) with heart rate analysis.

For example, algorithms can track color changes in two areas of the face, like regions near the eyes and cheek, using that data to calculate heart rate detection. Tracking these changes could better position hospital staff to more effectively monitor and treat patients.

This is nothing new for our Chinese readers and it is no surprise that the most surveilled Western city is keen on the technology but it is still a bit jarring when you think through the implications.

Similar to the government’s artificial intelligence safety conference last year, the planned policy statement includes “guardrails and safeguards” that it ­believes will demonstrate to the public how the controversial technology will not impinge on their privacy. There are also hopes that it can be introduced at fixed cameras at railway stations.

Live facial recognition uses cameras attached to the top of police vans to scan the faces of people as they walk past, immediately assessing them against a wanted list and alerting officers if there is a match.

Chris Philp, the minister for policing, said that it had “revolutionised” crime detection and £230 million would be spent on police technology, including more facial recognition vans, over the next four years....

China Now Has the Most Valuable AI Startup in the World
SenseTime Group Ltd. has raised $600 million from Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. and other investors at a valuation of more than $3 billion, becoming the world’s most valuable artificial intelligence startup.

The company, which specializes in systems that analyze faces and images on an enormous scale, said it closed a Series C round in recent months in which Singaporean state investment firm Temasek Holdings Pte and retailer Suning.com Co. also participated. SenseTime didn’t outline individual investments, but Alibaba was said to have sought the biggest stake in the three-year-old startup.

With the deal, SenseTime has doubled its valuation in a few months. Backed by Qualcomm Inc., it underscores its status as one of a crop of homegrown firms spearheading Beijing’s ambition to become the leader in AI by 2030. And it’s a contributor to the world’s biggest system of surveillance: if you’ve ever been photographed with a Chinese-made phone or walked the streets of a Chinese city, chances are your face has been digitally crunched by SenseTime software built into more than 100 million mobile devices.

The latest financing will bankroll investments in parallel fields such as autonomous driving and augmented reality, cover the growing cost of AI talent and shore up its computing power. It’s developing a service code-named “Viper” to parse data from thousands of live camera feeds -- a platform it hopes will prove invaluable in mass surveillance. And it’s already in talks to raise another round of funds and targeting a valuation of more than $4.5 billion, according to people familiar with the matter.

"We Are Crowdsourcing the Panopticon: Authorities routinely feed your videos into their surveillance databases"

A man raises his phone as police move into a crowd. The video is shaky, loud, immediate. Within minutes, it is online. Within hours, it is everywhere. This is how accountability works now. Something happens, someone records it, and that footage can show what really happened, sometimes contradicting official accounts. It can empower citizens and create consequences for officials.

But the footage’s life cycle does not end there.

In recent months, civil liberties groups have warned that adding facial recognition to consumer smart glasses could turn everyday recording into something more troubling: real-time facial identification. It reflects a broader shift already underway, where images and videos captured for one purpose can later be searched, matched, and used for another.

An ouroboros is an ancient Egyptian symbol, a snake or dragon eating its own tail. As I began to see patterns in my broader research on surveillance corporatism and governance lag, I began using the term “surveillance ouroboros” to describe this recursive pattern of observations intended to hold power accountable becoming new input for the same surveillance infrastructure.

Facial recognition changes accountability
During the George Floyd protests in 2020, people filmed police in real time. Phones were pointed at officers, not at each other. The goal was simple: to show what the state was doing. That footage spread quickly and became part of a much larger pool of public data.

At the same time, reporting from outlets including The New York Times and BuzzFeed News showed that law enforcement agencies were using facial-recognition tools, including systems built by Clearview AI. Those systems were built from billions of images scraped from across the internet, including publicly available photos and videos.

The basic approach is now routine: People record the state, or anything else (as in the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol), and the state compiles that footage and data into a searchable environment, which may later be used to identify some of the same people who made the footage.

Facial-recognition systems used by law enforcement are increasingly outpacing the legal safeguards.

A 2023 Government Accountability Office review found that federal law enforcement agencies continued to expand their use of facial-recognition systems for criminal investigations despite ongoing concerns around training, privacy protections, civil-liberties safeguards, and oversight. Earlier GAO findings showed that agencies had conducted roughly 60,000 facial-recognition searches before formal training requirements were put in place for personnel using the systems.

The American Civil Liberties Union and other groups have warned that these tools could be used to identify people from images shared online, including protest-related footage. Concerns about facial recognition led some U.S. states and cities, including San Francisco and Boston, to restrict or ban government use of the technology, while federal agencies have continued to face scrutiny over how such systems are tested, deployed, and audited. A 2024 analysis published in Internet Policy Review warned that facial-recognition systems used by law enforcement are increasingly outpacing the legal safeguards meant to govern them, creating growing tensions around data protection, oversight, and proportional use.

The spy network that built itself

Surveillance used to require infrastructure. Cameras had to be installed, and data had to be collected deliberately. That is no longer the case. People carry cameras everywhere. They record constantly and upload in real time. Events are documented from multiple angles without planning or coordination. The cumulative result is a continuous stream of usable data: faces, locations, timestamps, and interactions. The Internet of Things (IoT) also waits all around us, gathering information and releasing it when people least expect it, as Andrew Guthrie Ferguson describes in a recent excerpt of his book Your Data Will Be Used Against You.

Similar dynamics are emerging globally. A recent analysis in the International Journal of Law and Information Technology examined how facial-recognition systems in China and Japan are expanding faster than the legal frameworks governing them. Reporting by The Guardian described the limited legal protections around the rapid deployment of AI-assisted surveillance infrastructure across parts of Africa.

There used to be a clear distinction between surveillance and accountability. Surveillance meant the powerful watching the people; authorities tended not to share their imagery except under duress or a court order and usually after a long delay. Accountability meant the people watching the powerful and often publishing imagery immediately to head off or counteract official mischief. That distinction no longer holds. The same footage can serve both roles. A recording meant to expose misconduct can later be used to identify someone else entirely.

Surveillance ouroboros is not a future risk. It is already here.

This dynamic persists because people still need to record. In many places, it is one of the only tools available when formal accountability breaks down. When oversight institutions weaken or fail, public documentation becomes a substitute. In that environment, people turn to visibility. But that visibility comes with a cost. The more people that document, the more data that exists. The more data that exists, the easier it is to search, match, and store. Every video feeds the ouroboros. People are not feeding the system because they trust it. They are feeding it because the alternative is silence.

Most of the people in these videos are not the focus. They are in the background, passing by or standing nearby. But that distinction does not matter once the footage enters a system. Today’s facial recognition can identify even a face that passed through the corner of a frame. Someone who did nothing can still become part of a dataset without ever knowing it. As recognition systems improve, older footage becomes more useful—and invasive....

Regarding cameras, there is a nascent movement to remove bodycams from police officers because the cameras reveal some unpleasant behaviors on the part of those on whom the cameras are focused.

"The selling of facial recognition technology—and the staggering consequences"

For years, facial recognition technology has been one of the great bogeymen for civil liberties advocates. The ability to be recognized and tracked across public spaces represents an epochal shift in the nature of privacy, something akin to being fingerprinted everywhere one goes. Like fingerprinting, facial recognition is a biometric, meaning that we can never modify what it measures; barring a horrific event (one it’s better not to contemplate), your faceprint will remain unchanged. And as with a fingerprint, your faceprint is a singular piece of data, a unique user name and password combination that follows you through the world. That’s a problem if, say, a biometric database gets hacked; the Indian government’s biometric database, which contains information like retina scans on 1.19 billion people, has been hacked repeatedly, with ID information selling on WhatsApp for $5 to $10. You can change a hacked password, but not a face.

Long considered the province of security agencies—the FBI maintains an enormous facial recognition database comprising information on millions of Americans—this ominous technology has crept into the private sector, finding a keen reception from social media platforms, which are, like their government counterparts, invested in tracking their customers. Several years ago, Facebook announced that its own facial recognition engine could recognize faces with a level of accuracy rivaling that of human beings. But such declarations are mere mile-markers on the way to bigger things, namely the commercialization and widespread adoption of this technology of control. Based on the events of the last few months, it seems we’re approaching just that.

As Slate recently noted, the use of facial recognition technology has already spread to the more mundane corners of the commercial sphere. KFC has employed a facial-recognition-based recommendation program in China, as has a burger joint in California. Walmart has promised to use it to analyze customers’ emotional responses, while the upscale retailer Saks Fifth Avenue has dabbled in using the technology to identify known shoplifters and VIP customers. At LAX, airlines are testing facial recognition as a replacement for boarding passes. In China, public toilets use the tech to ration toilet paper.

In the last couple of weeks, untold numbers of social media users have given their likenesses away to Google’s Arts & Culture app, which has a selfie feature that compares your face to those found in famous works of art. That most users likely upload their selfies without a second thought only shows how we’ve been trained not to value our own privacy, or to have a sense of ownership over our data. Beyond the impositions of the FBI or TSA, it seems that this is how facial recognition will move through society: by way of a trained passivity and, at times, the promise of entertainment and convenience.

That brings us back to Facebook, which in December introduced “optional tools to help people better manage their identity on Facebook using face recognition.”...

FBI, ICE Using Facial Recognition To Bulk-Scan DMV Photos In "Unprecedented Surveillance Infrastructure"

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) along with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has been using state driver's license databases to run photos of millions of Americans through facial-recognition systems without their knowledge or consent, according to the Washington Post.
Thousands of facial-recognition requests, internal documents and emails over the past five years, obtained through public-records requests by Georgetown Law researchers and provided to The Washington Post, reveal that federal investigators have turned state departments of motor vehicles databases into the bedrock of an unprecedented surveillance infrastructure.
Police have long had access to fingerprints, DNA and other “biometric data” taken from criminal suspects. But the DMV records contain the photos of a vast majority of a state’s residents, most of whom have never been charged with a crime. -Washington Post
Disturbingly, neither Congress nor state legislatures have authorized this type of systemand none of us agreed to it when we obtained licenses.

"They’ve just given access to that to the FBI," said Rep. Jim Jordan, ranking GOP member of the House Oversight Committee. "No individual signed off on that when they renewed their driver’s license, got their driver’s licenses. They didn’t sign any waiver saying, ‘Oh, it’s okay to turn my information, my photo, over to the FBI.’ No elected officials voted for that to happen." 
"Law enforcement’s access of state databases," and in particular those of the DMV, is "often done in the shadows with no consent," added House Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah E. Cummings (D-MD). 
And as has been reported for some time, law enforcement has been relying on facial recognition technology as a routine investigative tool for years - and it's going to get worse
Since 2011, the FBI has logged more than 390,000 facial-recognition searches of federal and local databases, including state DMV databases, the Government Accountability Office said last month, and the records show that federal investigators have forged daily working relationships with DMV officials. In Utah, FBI and ICE agents logged more than 1,000 facial-recognition searches between 2015 and 2017, the records show. Names and other details are hidden, though dozens of the searches are marked as having returned a “possible match.” -Washington Post
Also disturbing is the fact that law enforcement often uses facial recognition to investigate low-level crime, with searches "often executed with nothing more formal than an email from a federal agent to a local contact," according to the Post

"It’s really a surveillance-first, ask-permission-later system," says Project on Government Oversight watchdog lawyer Jake Laperruque. "People think this is something coming way off in the future, but these [facial-recognition] searches are happening very frequently today. The FBI alone does 4,000 searches every month, and a lot of them go through state DMVs."
Targeting illegals with licenses? 

The Post also brings up the fact that undocumented residents who obtain driver's licenses in states which allow this may be subject to immigration enforcement due to the facial recognition technology....

"France Set to Roll Out Nationwide Facial Recognition ID Program"

Following up on October 1's "How facial recognition is taking over a French city".
From Bloomberg, October 2:
France is poised to become the first European country to use facial recognition technology to give citizens a secure digital identity -- whether they want it or not.
Saying it wants to make the state more efficient, President Emmanuel Macron’s government is pushing through plans to roll out an ID program, dubbed Alicem, in November, earlier than an initial Christmas target. The country’s data regulator says the program breaches the European rule of consent and a privacy group is challenging it in France’s highest administrative court. It took a hacker just over an hour to break into a “secure” government messaging app this year, raising concerns about the state’s security standards.

None of that is deterring the French interior ministry.
“The government wants to funnel people to use Alicem and facial recognition,” said Martin Drago, a lawyer member of the privacy group La Quadrature du Net that filed the suit against the state. “We’re heading into mass usage of facial recognition. (There’s) little interest in the importance of consent and choice.” The case, filed in July, won’t suspend Alicem.

Digital Identities
With the move, France will join states around the world rushing to create “digital identities” to give citizens secure access to everything from their taxes and banks to social security and utility bills. Singapore uses facial recognition and has signed an accord to help the U.K. prepare its own ID system. India uses iris scans.

France says the ID system won’t be used to keep tabs on residents. Unlike in China and Singapore, the country won’t be integrating the facial recognition biometric into citizens’ identity databases. In fact, the interior ministry, which developed the Alicem app, says the facial recognition data collected will be deleted when the enrollment process is over. That hasn’t stopped people from worrying about its potential misuse.

“Rushing into facial recognition at this point is a major risk” because of uncertainties on its final use, said Didier Baichere, a governing-party lawmaker who sits on the Parliament’s “future technologies” commission and is the author of a July report on the subject. Allowing mass-usage before putting in place proper checks and balances is “ludicrous,” he said....

China Now Has the Most Valuable AI Startup in the World
SenseTime Group Ltd. has raised $600 million from Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. and other investors at a valuation of more than $3 billion, becoming the world’s most valuable artificial intelligence startup.

The company, which specializes in systems that analyze faces and images on an enormous scale, said it closed a Series C round in recent months in which Singaporean state investment firm Temasek Holdings Pte and retailer Suning.com Co. also participated. SenseTime didn’t outline individual investments, but Alibaba was said to have sought the biggest stake in the three-year-old startup.

With the deal, SenseTime has doubled its valuation in a few months. Backed by Qualcomm Inc., it underscores its status as one of a crop of homegrown firms spearheading Beijing’s ambition to become the leader in AI by 2030. And it’s a contributor to the world’s biggest system of surveillance: if you’ve ever been photographed with a Chinese-made phone or walked the streets of a Chinese city, chances are your face has been digitally crunched by SenseTime software built into more than 100 million mobile devices.

The latest financing will bankroll investments in parallel fields such as autonomous driving and augmented reality, cover the growing cost of AI talent and shore up its computing power. It’s developing a service code-named “Viper” to parse data from thousands of live camera feeds -- a platform it hopes will prove invaluable in mass surveillance. And it’s already in talks to raise another round of funds and targeting a valuation of more than $4.5 billion, according to people familiar with the matter.

“We’re going to explore several new strategic directions and that’s why we shall spend more money on building infrastructure,” SenseTime co-founder Xu Li said in an interview. "‘Adversarial clothing’: are garments designed to confuse facial recognition systems about to go mainstream?"

This stuff looks a little too tame to fool the camera.

Designers say that as well as offering a degree of protection from surveillance, their clothes make a powerful fashion statement about the importance of privacy 

As facial recognition technology is rolled out across Britain’s public spaces, a new generation of designers say privacy could be the next big fashion trend.

Companies have started incorporating “adversarial patterns” in their garments – carefully designed arrangements of shapes, colours and repeated motifs said to exploit weaknesses in some computer vision systems.

The designers say advances in computing have made it easier to incorporate such patterns into commercially viable garments. Experts caution that the effectiveness of the patterns depends on the surveillance system and the conditions in which it is used, but Nick Tidball, the co-founder of the clothing brand Vollebak, thinks “adversarial clothing” could be on the cusp of going mainstream.

“Anti-surveillance feelings are so widespread that all it would take is for a single celebrity to wear one of these garments, currently popular in the countercultural fashion world, to a high-profile event for it to take off,” he said.

“So-called ‘adversarial clothing’ wins on many levels. As well as the practicality of protection, it’s fashionable and fun, it makes a powerful, public statement that many are in agreement with, it spreads even more awareness about the importance of privacy and it helps encourage public debate.” 

Unlike traditional CCTV, modern computer vision systems can identify faces, follow individuals across cameras and search footage at scale.

Recent advances in generative AI have made this type of automated identification cheaper and more widely available to police, retailers and private businesses, an expansion recently warned against by Britain’s biometrics watchdogs, which have called for more laws and a regulator to clamp down on misuse.

Evidence of misuse and that black and Asian people are more likely to be incorrectly identified than white people has led to increasing public concern. A recent poll showed almost 60% of people believed facial recognition was “another step towards turning the UK into a surveillance society”.

Dr Jennifer Bell, a senior lecturer specialising in creative AI, fashion and digital culture at Nottingham School of Art & Design, said clothing with anti-facial recognition designs was increasingly available at high street prices and was being marketed to a wide demographic. “That growing awareness combined with a lowering of cost often precedes the tipping point towards a real cultural moment,” she said.

Daniel Preuß, the co-founder of the Urban Privacy clothing brand, said new technology meant you could now “combine smart, striking style with invisible protection”.

He emphasised that because surveillance systems are so powerful, no design can guarantee security from detection, but said “the added value of fashion is to spread awareness and help propagate public discourse”.

Preuß said his designs used large-scale prints, asymmetrical cuts and streetwear-inspired silhouettes to confuse facial recognition algorithms. The company said its Urban Ghost coat integrates LEDs into the hood that emit infrared light to dazzle night-vision surveillance cameras.

Preuß, who co-founded his company after reading about the whistleblower Edward Snowden’s revelations about US surveillance in the Guardian, said his designs played with the fact that “facial recognition systems freak out when they see multiple faces at once”.

“Our patterns play with that chaos, confuse algorithms and make it way harder to pin you down,” he said.

Bell, however, said “none of these products are tried and tested, and a lot of these surveillance technologies can deal with a little resistance … [but] even if the designs don’t necessarily work perfectly, fashion is also a visible sign of resistance.

“This is consumers collectively coming together to make a visible statement.”....

One way to test it is to walk into a high end casino and time how long it takes for security to come tap you on your shoulder. If it's more than ten minutes you are just making a statement not hiding from the camera

Facial recognition In China

We'll be coming back to what has become a bit of an obsession on the blog, and the countermeasures thereto, but for now, just some of the applications. Remember, this isn't the state of the art, this is stuff that is being deployed right now.

If you’ve spent any meaningful amount of time in a managerial role, you probably understand the importance of having a team with members who feel comfortable speaking up when they disagree with you. That’s a critical component of high-performing teams, and one you take for granted when you start to manage teams of Chinese people. In addition to everyone being agreeable, there are other things that Western people will find difficult about managing teams of Chinese. It’s not the long lunches, it’s not that they like to sleep at their desks, and it’s not all the cute cartoon figurines they place on their computer monitors. It’s the fact that initially it’s hard to tell them apart.
Yes, we said it. Put most Western people in a room full of Chinese people and they’ll have a hard time telling them apart – initially. If you mention that to the Chinese, they’ll nod thoughtfully in agreement and tell you that to them, Western people all look the same too – like that character on Friends. This is because our brains were “trained” to recognize facial differences using different data sets. That’s also why when it comes to using artificial intelligence to identify facial differences, one size algorithm doesn’t fit all.
When it comes to applying facial recognition in China, the country seems to be farther ahead than any other. Just look at some of these examples:
And the list goes on. Meanwhile in the USA, everyone is up in arms over the fact that the algorithms can’t consistently identify people who have different skin colors. With few barriers to slow things down, and a lot of hard 9-9-6 work, the facial recognition market in China is rapidly reaching maturity. One company that’s managed to achieve unicorn status by telling Chinese people apart is SenseTime....MUCH MORE
