"ChatGPT Predicts It Could Replace At Least 4.8M American Jobs"

Part of the March 28 Wall Street Journal article on "Jobs Most Exposed To ChatGPT" was the University of Pennsylvania "WORKING PAPER: GPTs are GPTs: An Early Look at the Labor Market Impact Potential of Large Language Models" (pre-print at arXiv)

The other part of the Journal story was an experiment run by HR/outplacement mavens Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc. and written up on their blog, April 4, 2023:

AI Will Replace Tasks, But Will It Replace Jobs? ChatGPT Predicts It Could Replace At Least 4.8M American Jobs

In the face of new artificial intelligence models like ChatGPT, labor experts are struggling to understand the implication on the labor market. Goldman Sachs estimated 18% of jobs could be eliminated due to AI technology globally.

To see what the software itself thought it could replace, Challenger asked ChatGPT directly. If its answer is correct, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), over 4.8 million American jobs could be replaced by this artificial intelligence.

“Right now, artificial intelligence should be viewed as a tool to support workers and not as a replacement for their roles. Certainly, predictive language models can be used to automate tasks, giving workers more time to focus on those involving higher thinking,” said Andrew Challenger, Senior Vice President of global outplacement and executive coaching firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc.

To the question, “What jobs can ChatGPT replace?” the software answered that it could replace functions centered on language that were repetitive and predictable. Many were roles that the BLS estimates will decline over the next decade, but some were expected to grow. For instance, the BLS predicts translators and interpreters will grow by 20% by 2031.

These were the roles ChatGPT listed it could replace:

  • Customer Service Representatives: ChatGPT can be used to provide automated responses to customer queries and issues, reducing the need for human customer service representatives.”
Current employment: 2.9M
The BLS estimates this role will decline by 4% over the next 10 years.
  • Technical Writers: ChatGPT can be used to generate technical documentation, user manuals, and other forms of written content, replacing the need for human technical writers.”
Current employment: 55,400
The BLS estimates these jobs will grow by 6% over the next 10 years.
  • Translators and Interpreters: ChatGPT can be used to translate text and interpret spoken language, potentially reducing the need for human translators and interpreters.”
Current employment: 69,400
The BLS estimates this role will grow by 20% over the next 10 years.
  • Copywriters: ChatGPT can be used to generate marketing copy, product descriptions, and other types of written content, replacing the need for human copywriters.”
Current employment (Advertising & Marketing Managers): 347,000
The BLS predicts this role will decline by 5% over the next decade.

The language model was also quick to point out it could create jobs and identified the below as the top fields in which AI would do so....

If  ChatGPT starts naming the individuals to be made redundant we, of course, will have to kill the bot, with fire.
