Ukrainian negotiators have proposed renaming a contested part of the country’s eastern Donbas region ‘Donnyland’ in honor of President Trump, the New York Times has reported.
The suggestion was originally made light-heartedly, the paper said citing anonymous Ukrainian officials close to the peace talks. But analysts say that appealing to Trump’s vanity may be seen as offering greater security for a region in Russia’s crosshairs.
A member of Kyiv’s negotiating team has even created a green-and-gold flag for Donnyland and a national anthem, using ChatGPT, the New York Times reported.
Defensive bulwark
The swath of land, approximately 80 kilometers long and 65 wide, has been the main sticking point in peace negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow.Ukrainian forces still control the area, despite Russia’s occupation of most of the industrial Donbas region.
The Kremlin has insisted that the land be conceded in return for peace, but Ukraine has refused, in part because the heavily fortified stretch of land acts as a bulwark against any further Russian advances.
Kyiv’s fear is that by giving up control of ‘Donnyland,’ they risk a future renewal of Russian aggression....
