"China's Moore Threads unveils new chip in homegrown AI race"

From Nikkei Asia, December 20:

CEO claims performance nears that of Nvidia's Blackwell chips

Chinese startup Moore Threads on Saturday announced a new artificial intelligence chip and showcased various potential applications, as the country races to build homegrown AI infrastructure.

At a developers conference in Beijing, where the company is based, founder and CEO Zhang Jianzhong said the new graphics processing unit (GPU) architecture, called Huagang, will improve performance 10 times compared to its previous generation.

"Currently, the gap between China and the U.S. is still very large," he said. "How can we help our developers keep pace and enable them to develop faster and go further?"

Zhang claimed the new chip outperforms Nvidia's previous generation of chips, called Hopper, based on metrics like floating point operations per second, and nears that of its current Blackwell chips. More than 100,000 GPUs can be linked together to train powerful AI models in data centers, he said.

The company did not provide details on the timing of its production, release or manufacturing partner. Moore Threads is on the U.S. Entity List, which restricts it from accessing Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.'s cutting-edge chipmaking technology....
