Capital Markets: "Euro Pressure Persists"

From Marc Chandler at Bannockburn Global Forex:

Fears over the AI-meme, which took the semiconductor index down more than 10% last week, has stabilized with the help of favorable earnings by Super Micro Computer and SpaceX. South Korea’s Kospi dropped 14.5% last week amid the anxiety. It rallied 3.3% today and is now higher on the week. On the other hand, the pressure in the European bond market continues. The French 10-year yield is edging closer to 5.00% and the premium over Germany is approached 160 bp. The widening of the peripheral premiums over Germany is seeing the euro underperform.

The US and Canadian economic calendars are light today, and the foreign exchange session may take its cues from the stock and bond markets. The firm oil prices are lending support the Norwegian krone. The Australian dollar extended is gains and is at a new high for the month. The faster UK inflation boosted the market’s confidence of a BOE rate hike early next month and sterling is traded at its best level against the euro since May 2025. Tensions in US-Mexican trade talks keep the peso on the defensive.
