"California gas prices soar after one of Bay Area's few refineries catches fire"

Bay Area drivers are seeing gas prices soar after one of the region’s few refineries caught on fire on Monday

Gas prices in California have already gone up several cents, according to data from AAA, since the fire at the Valero refinery in Benicia, which is one of the nine refineries left in California that produces gasoline. A week ago, the state average was $4.777 per gallon of regular gas and as of May 8, the average is $4.826, the data shows.  

Some of the highest prices in the state are in the Bay Area, with every county breaking the $5 mark, except for Contra Costa County, which is currently sitting at $4.997, and Solano County, at $4.955 per gallon. In Sonoma County, which has the most expensive gas in the Bay Area currently, prices were at $5.173 per gallon Thursday.

The price hike can be expected to continue for the next week or two, and could go up an additional 5 to 20 cents, Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, a company that tracks gas prices, told SFGATE....
