SK Hynix, the world’s leading producer of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) that speeds the performance of AI chips, plans to invest more than ₩20 trillion ($14.6 billion) in a new fab in South Korea.
In a press statement released on April 24, the company said it aims to complete construction of the facility by November 2025 to meet soaring demand and strengthen its market leadership. The fab, named M15X, in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, will expand production capacity of next-generation DRAM and HBM from the new production base.
“With transformation into a key facility that supplies AI memories to the world, M15X will play a pivotal role as a steppingstone connecting the company’s present and future,” said SK Hynix CEO Kwak Noh-Jung, in prepared remarks. “We are confident that this investment will be a giant leap that goes beyond the private sector for contribution to the future of the broader domestic economy.”
With the advent of the AI era, the memory industry has entered a mid- to long-term growth phase, the company said. Along with HBM, which is expected to grow more than 60% annually, SK Hynix forecasts that demand for general DRAM will steadily rise led by high-capacity DDR5 module products for servers....
